Object ID:
2017.009.045
Object Name:
Print, Photographic
Description:
Black & white print of a photograph showing LST-496 moored alongside at least 2 other unidentified LSTs loading equipment in an unknown location (possibly in Southern England in preparation for D-Day). The ship appears to have vehicles on the main deck, though none of the 6 davits appear to be loaded with LCVPs. LST-496 was sunk by German mines on June 11, 1944 off Omaha Beach, Normandy, France. The ship's number is stamped in gold lettering at the bottom and "Our Navy Photos, Brooklyn, N.Y. 11217" is printed in the lower right corner.
