U.S.S. Harnett County Transfer to Vietnamese Service
Object ID:
2016.296.11
Object Name:
Program
Scope & Content:
Set of 4 modern reprints of the program for the combined U.S. Navy Decommissioning Ceremony of the U.S.S. Harnett County (AGP-821) and subsequent (South) Vietnamese Commissioning Ceremony of T.X.H. My Tho (HQ-800) on October 12, 1970. No information was provided on the reprinting of these.

Original, the Harnett County was built and commissioned as LST-821 in World War II before being converted into a Patrol Craft Tender (AGP) and used in Vietnam. The ship was eventually transferred into the South Vietnamese Navy and renamed HQ-800 T.X.H. My Tho. Prior to the fall of South Vietnam, the ship was again transferred, this time to the Philippine Navy where it was renamed LT-57 BRP Sierre Madre. The vessel is still technically in service as the Sierra Madre, though it is no longer operational. Instead, it sits grounded on the Ayungin Shoal in the Spratley Islands, acting as a forward outpost with marines stationed there to maintain territorial rights over the area.
