Description:
Black & white print of a photograph showing LST-1171 (U.S.S. De Soto County) anchored in an unknown location. LST-1171 is the lead ship for the De Soto County Class LSTs and thus features some key differences from previous classes of the ships. Structurally, this class is significantlly longer at 445 feet and significantly wider at 62 feet, as well as having a re-shaped bow (at the main deck) and a single large smoke-stack behind the superstructure instead of two smaller ones to the sides. The main deck does not appear to be loaded. The ship's name (spelled "DESOTA") is stamped in gold lettering near the bottom and "Our Navy Photos, Brooklyn, N.Y. 11217" is printed in the bottom right corner.
